California Trying To Cope With 3 Mass Shootings
In just three days, Californians have been inundated with news of three mass shootings in three different locales:: Monterey Park, Half Moon Bay, and Oakland. Everyday, more innocent lives are being claimed due to the prevalence of gun violence.
There were 19 total victims of these three mass shootings. In Monterey Park, the shooter opened fire inside Star Ballroom Dance Studio on Lunar New Year’s Eve. The victims were all of Asian descent. A farmworker perpetrated theHalf Moon Bay shooting at two mushroom farms. The victims were immigrant laborers. There is speculation about whether these tragedies were racially motivated toward minorities.
What has been the response to these shootings? In California, both Republican and Democratic lawmakers have introduced state legislation aimed at reducing gun violence. Their legislative approaches differ, however. Democrats, such as California Governor Gavin Newsome, are seeking more gun laws. His fellow Democratic lawmakers have introduced nearly 30 bills related to firearms and gun control so far in this legislative session. More are expected.
Republican state legislators eschew gun control. Rather, they want more “crime control.” These politicians have introduced new laws proposing harsher sentencing for criminals who use a firearm during a violent crime. The more conservative California legislators are focusing on deterrents and enforcement.
No matter the response, change needs to occur. Gun control and reducing instances of gun violence must remain a top priority for law officials and makers. Americans are expressing frustration at the frequency of these mass shootings. Sending prayers, positive thoughts, and wishing for change will not have an effect. Action is needed now more than ever.
