U.S. Military Secrets Regarding the War Have Been Leaked Online

Classified Pentagon documents were leaked online in recent weeks and have provided the world a view into how the US spies on allies and foes in the same manner, deeply shaking US officials, who fear the leak could jeopardize sensitive and critical foreign relationships. 

Some documents, which US officials say are genuine, reveal the extent of US espionage on allies, including South Korea, Israel, and Ukraine. 

Other documents reveal the degree to which the US has infiltrated the Russian Ministry of Defense, mainly through intercepting communications and human sources, which could now be cut off or put in danger. 

Ukraine has already altered some of its military plans because of the leak, a source close to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has revealed as some of the leaked documents included Ukraines spring offense strategy for the ongoing war with Russia. 

The documents appeared online last month on the social media platform Discord. A Discord spokesperson stated Sunday that they are cooperating with law enforcement on the investigation. 

While spying is an inevitable part of how the US collects information globally, diplomats from some countries mentioned have stated that it was frustrating and harmful to the US reputation to see private information exposed publicly. 

The Department of Justice has opened a criminal investigation into the leak of dozens of documents, and US officials are working to determine the source of the leak and what ramifications it could have on the battlefield and US efforts to gather intelligence.
